Je reist (2-3 personen) met een stoere en sterke Russische jeep, of (4-6 personen) in een 4WD Russisch minibusje. Tegen een toeslag is het mogelijk om met een luxere en van betere vering voorziene landrover te reizen, zoals bijvoorbeeld een Toyota Landcruiser of Mitsubishi Pajero.

De Mongoolse chauffeur hoort bij de jeep/minibus, is ervaren, en kent het gebied waar je heengaat op zijn duimpje, wat wel nodig is in een land met bijna alleen onverharde paden, en zonder wegwijzers.

Verder gaat er altijd een gids/kok mee die met name ook tolk is. De meeste gidsen/tolken zijn Engelstalig, maar we hebben ook Duits, Japans, Spaans, Frans, Russisch en Japanstalige tolken. Als onze gidsen/tolken zijn door ons zelf opgeleid.

Onderweg wordt gekampeerd; wat past beter in een nomadenland als Mongolie. De gids/tolk zorgt voor de maaltijd, en de bijbehorende inkoop.

Ook is het soms mogelijk om bij een nomadenfamilie in hun ger te overnachten.

Ze moeten wel plek hebben!

JEEP TOUR EXAMPLE - GOBI, KARACHORAN, TSAGAAN NUUR, AND KHOVSGOL NUUR

Day 1. Soon after leaving Ulaanbaatar we see the typical landscape of Central Mongolia the rolling green grasslands filled with wild flowers. The gers of the nomads with their animals are dotted on the landscape. Wild animals from eagles to marmots are spotted. First camp will be close to the village Erdenedalay.

Day 2. Passing through the province of Middle Gobi we arrive into South Gobi . The landscape becomes drier. We will pass Erdenedalay with a beautiful monastery. On the way to the village Mandal Ovoo we will pass a flat stone desert where nothing grows except mirages on the horizon. Bayan Zag is an area of rock formations, red cliffs, scrub, emptiness, and dinosaur skeletons are found.

Day 3. To the south we can see the mountain range Altai Nuruu. The mountains rise up from the desert plains and reach an altitude of more then 2800m. The higher rainfall than the surrounding desert turns the landscape green. We will cross the mountains on a 2200m high pass and will camp south of the mountains near the ruins of a monastery.

Day 4. We will visit Yolyn Am which is famous for its wildlife and dramatic landscape. Itís a narrow valley which even in July still has snow and ice. The area is home of Gobi bear, snow leopards, ibex and Marco Polo sheep. Camping near Yolin Am.

Day 5. We will go the provincial capital Dalanzadgad with a population of 12 500 and a lively market and a museum. From here we will go northwest. Camping near the sand dunes of Moltsog Els giving a good incite to the Desert.

Day 6. The landscape flattens out but in a distance you can always see the mountain ranges with summits up to 3600m. Later the landscape becomes green and the Nomads return. We will pass the small settlement Bulgan and enter the province of Ovor Khangai. We will camp near the small village Guchin Us.

Day 7. Travelling through provincial capital Arvaiheer we enter the green and lush Khangai Mountains with pine forests. We will camp near Nomads so we can observe their daily life and get some yoghurt considered the best of Mongolia. Via Shankh Khiid we go to Kharkhoram this was the capital of the Mongolian empire founded by Chinggis Khan. There is virtually nothing left of the old city, but the Erdene Zuu monastery which was built in the 16th century is very impressive. The Buddhist monastery consists of beautiful temples, statues and stupaís.

Day 8. From Kharachoram the route turns eastwards to Tsetserleg, the capital of the province Arkhangai. Nicely situated small town surrounded by forested hills. On the way to Tsetserleg you can visit the natural hot spring at Tsenkher.

Day 9. From Tsetserleg further east to Tsagaan Nuur. The road becomes sometimes rough and there are some mountain pass crossings at above 2000 meter in altitude.

Day 10. Free day at the lake.The lake itself is on 2060 meter and is surrounded by mountains and some extinct volcanoes of around 3000 meter.

Day 11. From Tsagaan Nuur up north to Khosgol Nuur in 2 days. Roads can be very difficult in this area, especially after rain. Camping near the village Shine Ider.

Day 12. Via Moron the capital of the province Khovsgol to the lake. We have to cross some rivers which could be difficult to cross after rain upstream (no bridges).

Day 13-14. Stay at the lake . It is possible to walk along the lake or into the partly forested mountains surrounding the lake. You can visit some Tsataan families.

Day 15. Same way back to Moron. From Moron eastwards and southeastward in the direction of Ulaan. Camping near Hutag Ondor in Bulgan province.

Day 16. The Selenge river will be crossed and some extinct volcanoes will be passed. Bulgan is the small capital of the province with the same name. Across rolling steppes further to Bugat, a small village. Just before Bugat a winding road leads across a pass surrounded by meadows full with flowers in summer.

Day 17. To Erdenet, Mongoliaís third city with 60.000 people and one of the biggest copper mines of the world. In Erdenet the paved road starts but to Amarbayasgalant Khiid is a detour across dirt roads. Amarbayasgalant Khiid is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Mongolia. We will camp near the monastery and vist the temples the next day.

Day 18. The monastery is most interesting to visit in the morning when the religious ceremonies take place: the monks are praying and chanting, while pilgrims are visiting the temples.Back to the main road and via Darhan back to Ulaanbaatar.
