Ooit veroverde de Mongoolse krijgers te paard de helft van de toen bekende wereld, en nog steeds heeft elke nomadenfamilie paarden om het werk uit te voren. Rondtrekken te paard en overnachten in tenten is daarom waarschijnlijk wel dé manier van reizen die het beste past in dit land. Bij onze paardentrekkings reis je rond op de vrij kleine en taaie Mongoolse paarden. Wij werken hierbij samen met een aantal echte paardenfamilies, waarvan altijd iemand meegaat als de locale gids. Daarnaast gaat er ook een gids/tolk/kok vanuit Ulaan Baatar mee. Wij gebruiken onze eigen leren zadels; de Mongolen geven de voorkeur aan de traditionele houten zadels, maar de meeste buitenlanders hebben hier moeite mee. De bagage wordt vervoerd door lastdieren, meestal pak-paarden, maar in sommige gebieden kunnen dit ook kamelen of yaks zijn. Het help als je als wat paardrijervaring hebt, maar een vereiste is dat niet. Ook mensen die nog nooit op een paard hebben gezeten, kunnen na een of twee dagen instructie de trekking volbrengen. Veel van de door ons aangeboden paardentrekkings zijn in het Khentii- en Hanggai-gebergtes, maar andere gebieden zijn ook mogelijk. In verband met het vervoer er naar toen en terug zijn deze reizen altijd in combinatie met een jeeptour.
HORSE TREK EXAMPLE - KHAN KHENHTI Day 1. We leave Ulaanbaatar and head eastwards to the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area. At 40km we cross a large wooden bridge across the Tuul River and enter the southern and most visited part of the protected area usually referred as Terelj National Park. Here we can see lots of rock formations, which are named after their shape such as Turtle Rock. We will cross a mountain pass and reach a small settlement where we will cross the River Terelj. There is no bridge so we need the 4WD to cross the river. In summer as it can be deep. From here on there are no tarmac roads anymore only unpaved paths. By 4WD jeep or minivan we can reach the starting point of the trek. On the first day you will do a little horse riding to choose the right horse for you.Day 2-7. The horse trek takes place in an area of wilderness extending all the way to the Russian border. There are lush rolling grasslands full with wild flowers (such as Edelweiss), forests with pine and birch trees and mountains up to 2800m. Sometimes we have to cross the fast flowing rivers. There is lots of wildlife in the area; wolves, brown bear, lynx, red deer and moose, but they are hard to see during the summer except for the smaller ones like marmots, foxes, eagles and cranes. In the southern area we will see a few nomadic families who travel around with their herds of horses, cows, yaks, sheep and goats. We will stay with some of them and experience the traditional nomadic life style. Further north is less grassland and more forest with lakes and few nomads. In this area we will camp in tents brought by the packhorses or on a yak cart. After 6 days on horse back we will come back to the starting point of the trek and will be picked up by jeep or Minivan to return to Ulaanbaatar. |
