The Khentii Mountains begin immediately northwest of Ulaan Baatar, crossing the vast distance to the Russian border. This wild area is very easily reachable from the capital. One hour driving out of UB and you will start to see civilization being left behind. By Mongolian standards Terelj is still a tourist town, hosting several tourist ger camps. It is memorable for its beautiful countryside with alpine-esque surroundings, blooming edelweiss and orchids and primeval rocky formations. A little further out and the paved road come to an abrupt end. After fording the river in 4WD vehicles you will arrive in an extensive wilderness.
Close to Ulaan Baatar it is likely that we will meet some nomad families, however the forested area closer to the Russian border is largely uninhabited. Many wild animals, including deer, bears, wolves, and foxes inhabit this area. It is a perfect place for long, rugged treks, but from Terelj you can also make less strenuous trips to visit nomads.
